Graduate’s Checklist

First Year: Getting Acquainted

Meet a career advisor to learn about the services of Career Services.  Familiarize yourself with the office and meet the staff.

Visit the Career Services Web site, which offers information like “What can I do with a major in,” tools on resume development, links to companies, many assessments and much more!

Create a resume and make an appointment to have a career advisor to review it.  This is your starting point for your career.

Attend workshops on “What can I do with a major in,” Resume Writing, Interviewing, Internships, and Job Searching.

Explore your career interests on Wiscareers and complete a few assessments.

Volunteer for your favorite organization or get involved in a student organization.

Register with Career Services for TITAN GOLD and create a profile so employers can connect with you.

Second Year: Exploring

Attend company information meetings

Conduct informational interviews or job shadow with alumni from the university or contact a professional in the local community in your fields of interest to test your perceptions.

Register for the Career Implementation 1 credit course, Counselor Education 202.

Consider a new part-time job that is more directly related to your career goal(s).  Stop in the Career Services office and look at the Part-time jobs board.

Attend the part-time job fair to look for a job during the school year – Tuesday after Labor Day.

 Explore student organizations/clubs on campus and pick two of them that you will become a member of and actively participate in meetings and events.

Explore different job postings in your area/major to determine the relevant skills needed to obtain positions when you graduate.  Obtain those skills.

Attend job fairs to get familiar with companies and to get updates on what kinds of opportunities are currently available.

Maintain your resume and by adding any relevant experience you have gained this year either through work experience or class projects.

Create your network by starting a list of friends and family that may be influential in your internship or career search.

Third Year: Further Exploring

Still confused about your career…your major…your future?  Stop by the Career Services office and make an appointment with a career advisor.

Put an action plan together to determine your goals, weigh your options, and make some preliminary decisions.

Continue your involvement in your student organizations/clubs and run for an executive board position.  Gain leadership experience and utilize any opportunity to network.

Have you considered graduate school? Now is the time to research these opportunities. 

Attend Mock Interviews in Career Services to gain valuable skills and feedback on your interviewing skills.

Update your resume to ensure you have up-to-date information and experience on your resume.

Do some in-depth research in Career Services on job opportunities and companies you would like to visit/work for.

Obtain an internship in your area to gain professional experience.

Attend either the Fall or Spring Job Fair to experience the event and find an internship.

Networking with employers who could become mentors.

Fourth Year: Putting It All Together

Attend workshops on Resume Writing, Job Searching, Interviewing, Job Fair Success, and/or gearing up for Graduate School.

Implement your action plan for your job search.

Make sure you have an up-to-date resume posted on TITAN GOLD.

Check out the Career Services web site for current job openings.

Take the GRE if you are planning to attend graduate school.  Submit your application materials to the school of interest.  Write essays for application materials.

Begin identifying potential employers by field and geographic location.

Make sure to follow up on the resumes you send out by calling the company to express your ongoing interest.

Participate in on-campus recruiting.

Conduct informational and employment interviews.

Attend the Fall and/or Spring Job Fair to see what jobs are available.

Write thank you notes to interviewer
