The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh community is concerned about the misuse and abuse of alcohol and other drugs. We in the Dean of Students Office make it a part of our mission to help provide a helpful and healthy atmosphere in which our students and faculty and staff can live, learn, and work. Michael P. Haines, coordinator of health-enhancement services at Northern Illinois University says things are changing all over the country. Haines says "the vast majority of students dont harm themselves or others as part of their drinking behavior, and that is the best-kept secret in the country. Instead of bemoaning drinking, colleges should take every opportunity to point out that the movie, Animal House, is not reality. The percentage of their classmates that get blitzed on weekends is in fact very low. Here at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh 30% of our students dont drink alcohol at all. And of those that do drink alcohol, 65% report having 5 or fewer drinks a week. So even though some students think, "everybody is getting drunk," in reality many students are attempting to avoid the problems associated with drinking by choosing not to drink or by setting healthy limits. Success or the lack of can also be attributed to the misuse of alcohol. The CORE INSTITUTE developed the following table: Grade Point Average and Average Number of Drinks Per Week
